The Home Grown Project Inc. is a not for profit organization, overseen by a Committee of Management, whose purpose is to install fully operational and sustainable vegetable gardens, for educational purposes, into Australian Schools.

Through interaction with the vegetable gardens, The Home Grown Project anticipates that students will gain knowledge and skills to promote healthy eating and lifestyle choices with an understanding of environmental, conservation and sustainability practices.

The Home Grown Project Inc. recently received a grant from The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing ~ Healthy Active Community and Schools Grants program to install its 18 month pilot program into 12 Victorian Primary Schools.
Having received 120+ applications from Victorian Primary Schools, The Home Grown Project team had the difficult task of selecting only 12 Schools for the pilot roll out. 

The 18 month Home Grown Project sees each participating School receive the following:

Installation of a fully operational vegetable garden which generally includes:

  • Seven 5 mtr. X 1 mtr. veggie beds - (one per year level),
  • These beds are constructed from - Arsenate free ECOWOOD and filled with Daisy’s Garden Supplies top quality organic veggie bed soil mix.

    1 x fully plumbed 5000 ltr. round NYLEX Water Solutions Water Tank

    1 x Aerobin composting system

    3 seasons worth of The Diggers Club seeds and United Nurseries seedlings

    Tools to assist with the ongoing maintenance of the garden, such as;
  • watering cans, student cultivators, gardening fork, water gauge, gardening gloves and the like.
     

Schools will also receive, 8 visits by The Home Grown Project’s Installation / School Visits Manager, Andrew Prater, which will include:

  • Two seed/ling planting days which include information dissemination sessions with all of the students and teachers
  • Four maintenance visits to assist the School with the correct upkeep of the garden, whilst they are embedding it into their curriculum/community
  • Two further information dissemination sessions with the students and teachers designed to develop basic gardening skills and to pass on knowledge that will assist in promoting healthy eating and lifestyle choices with an understanding of environmental, conservation and sustainability practices.
